In the misty folds of southern Humboldt’s Lost Coast mountains, Bob McKee quietly reshaped the land beneath the legacy of California’s cannabis culture. Generations of farmers and their families can trace their roots back to his vision.
Beginning in the 1970s, when few banks were willing to lend to homesteaders—particularly those associated with outlaw cannabis cultivation—McKee offered another path. As a real estate broker and land developer, he subdivided large tracts of land and used ‘creative financing’ including low down payments and owner financing to make property accessible to back-to-the-landers, counterculture families, and aspiring growers.
The parcels were often rugged, remote, and off-grid. For hundreds of people, however, they offered something difficult to find elsewhere: the chance to build a home, form a community, and create a life rooted in the land.
McKee was more than a land seller. Known as the “Gandalf of the Back-to-the-Land movement”, he was a deeply rooted presence in the hills of Sohum. He regarded the land as something worthy of care and believed that people willing to live in relationship with it deserved an opportunity to belong there. His actions created a ripple effect, helping to establish a rich counterculture and strong community from which the region’s cannabis legacy would grow.
That legacy continues through his family. Today, his grandson Galen carries it forward as the founder of Whitethorn Valley Farms, a regenerative-organic cannabis farm near the places where Bob once worked. Galen’s approach to cultivation reflects values passed through the family: respect for the land, strong community ties, and a commitment to responsible stewardship.
At the crossroads of Shelter Cove Road in Whitethorn, the past and present remain closely connected. Whitethorn Construction Company, hosts a myriad of enterprises including a specialty hardwoods mill, construction supply store, gallery and showroom, J Cafe, Sanctuary Forest, and more. This is a small but active community hub where travelers can encounter the living culture Bob helped make possible.
