Monuments

The Monument Initiative creates three permanent, impactful art installments along The Cannabis Trail that pay homage to the people, places and benchmark moments of the California cannabis legalization movement.

While only one Monument currently exists, the compassion mural in The Castro in San Francisco at Flore, the goal is to create more Monuments honoring the cannabis community in other locations along the Trail, especially in the Emerald Triangle. In the meantime, visiting the Trail’s Landmarks is the best way to experience the Trail as it develops. Our Landmarks are the beating heart of the Cannabis Trail and our partners in creating a travelable experience. The Monuments will be the soul honoring those we have lost along the way in our fight to free the plant and its people.

Potential concepts for future Monuments include:

  • Works of art dedicated to the patient rights activism and community organizing of Dennis Peron and Brownie Mary
Watch The Secret Story… video in Stories
  • The story of the War on Drugs and how it impacted communities
  • The Back-to-the-Land migration of hippies to the north coast
  • Small farmer life off-the-grid underground
  • The role of cannabis as a medicine during the HIV/AIDS epidemic
